The Winnipeg Police Service says that there were several serious incidents to start off the long weekend in which their own officers, security guards, and loss prevention officers were assaulted.

Woman hits officer with beer bottle

The first incident occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday when police were called to a party in the Wolsely neighbourhood. They were called due to a report of a fight between a man and a woman. 

The WPS says that "As officers attempted to diffuse the situation, the female soaked an officer with beer and struck him in the face with a bottle. She then kicked the other officer in the groin as she was taken into custody."

The woman also allegedly "spat a large amount of bloody saliva into the face of one of the officers as they attempted to speak with her and threatened to kill both of them."

The 31-year-old woman is facing a number of charges including assault a peace officer with a weapon.

Warrant arrest leads to assault

Early Saturday evening a General Patrol unit located a female in the 400 block of Hamilton Avenue that was subject of an arrest warrant for failing to attend court. As the female was being handcuffed, she became belligerent and spat in the face of an officer while making a threat to kill him. The female remained aggressive throughout her arrest.

The 21-year-old has been charged with assault a peace officer, and uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm.

Security guard punched

Just a short time later on Saturday evening a security guard was punched.

Police say a woman was causing a disturbance near the rear doors of a business in the 300 block of Portage Avenue when she was asked to leave by a security guard.

The female subsequently punched the security guard in the head and broke her glasses. A second security guard responded, and the female spat in his face before kicking him in the chest. The female was taken into custody and turned over to members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

A 20-year-old woman is facing four charges, including fail to comply condition recognizance by judge/justice.

Shoplifter punches employe

A 32-year-old woman has been charged with assault following an incident Friday afternoon. Police say that a woman attempted to steal merchandise from a business in the 300 block of Portage Avenue but was confronted by an employee along with a security guard.

The female returned the property but refused to leave and punched the employee in the face. She was subsequently taken into custody and turned over to members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

3 women spray employee with bear spray

Early Friday evening General Patrol officers responded to the first 100 block of Marion Street for a report of a robbery.

Three females had entered a retail store, at which time one female stole merchandise and left without paying. A loss prevention officer attempted to stop the female and was sprayed with a substance believed to be bear spray. The three females then fled.

The substance also affected numerous other shoppers who were assessed and treated by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
