Southern Manitoba's weekend heat wave is believed responsible for two deaths, according to a provincial official.

A government spokesperson says the province is working with the chief medical examiner to confirm the causes of death, and to confirm any drug use.

The victims' ages and places of residence were not provided.

Heath officials say people should stay hydrated and check on those who are vulnerable such as the older adults.

Environment Canada issued an extreme heat warning on Monday for much of southern Manitoba as heat and humidity combined to reach nearly 40 degrees.
