Part of a 107-year-old Catholic church has burned in central Edmonton.

Firefighters arrived at the Sacred Heart Church Of The First Peoples yesterday afternoon to find flames on the back corner and roof of the building.

Pastor Susai Jesu says that when he let firefighters in, it appeared the storage room was on fire.

Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, says the church will be rebuilt.

He says for decades it has been the Catholic gathering place for Indigenous peoples.

The church posted a video on Sunday morning of the fire and asked for prayers. Hundreds of people commented, offering their prayers and well wishes.

There is no word on the cause of the fire this time or damage estimates.
