October is autism awareness month in Canada.

It is estimated that 1 in 66 children and youth has been diagnosed with autism in Canada, yet Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that remains misunderstood by many people. Teresa Hedley wants to change that.

"Awareness is like handing out catcher's mitts," Hedley explains. "It helps us to know what to do and how to receive and understand a person with autism."

Hedley is an author, advocate, educator, curriculum designer and mother of a son with autism. Last year she released a book titled,  What's Not Allowed? A Family Journey with Autism, in hopes of giving others a better perspective of what it's like for someone living with autism.

The tales are those of any and every family living with autism; they pose questions, poke at philosophies and offer insight into shaping potential. What matters? What sculpts? What are we trying to achieve?

Today on Connections, Teresa shares her family's journey with autism in hopes of educating others.
