Authorities say a correctional facility officer is being charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Failing to Provide the Necessities of Life.

On February 7 last year, shortly before 7 p.m., RCMP Manitoba received a call about an unresponsive male inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre. Authorities say after their Major Crime Services immediately began investigating the incident. Seven days, later, the 45-year-old inmate died in the hospital.

"The investigation determined that there was a prolonged standoff between Correction Officers and an inmate in a common area within Headingley Correctional Centre. The standoff ended when the facility’s Critical Emergency Response Team extracted the inmate from the area," RCMP Manitoba says in a Friday statement.

The Chief Medical Examiner's Office of Manitoba has ruled this a homicide.

A 43-year-old  Headingley Correctional Centre officer is now facing Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Failing to Provide the Necessities of Life.
